Melbourne Baby Portrait Photography Studio Session

18th December 2012

We recently had the pleasure of photographing Lucas, a very cute 6 month old baby and we are chuffed with the results and (more importantly) so are Joe and Danni, his parents.

The photo shoot was done in the morning, when the baby was well rested but funnily enough, we ended up with the best results towards the end of the studio session, when Lucas was playing up to the camera due to tiredness.

The constant challenge of portraiture is to engage with your subject and put him or her at ease in front of the camera, especially in a studio environment, on a stage flooded with artificial light.

In a baby portrait session you need to be creative when it comes to get them to look at the camera and smile at the right time. We got Joe and Danni to do peek-a-boo behind our back, they blew bubbles and called his name. We got the best results when we dangled a bunch of keys next to the lens.

Our favourite photos took place on a white ottoman with the white background giving the optical illusion of a very cute flying baby.

His dad’s favourite portrait captured the baby balancing on a football. As you can see from the photograph, dad is a big Geelong Cats supporter.

Another interesting image is the Black and White Baby Portrait below. The high key image with the seamless white background and the baby’s pose give the image a more traditional baby portrait feel.

The last photograph below was taken at the start of the session. That explains the slightly stunned expression on this Baby Portrait.

Baby Portraiture

We got the chance to see gorgeous Lucas again when we delivered the photos and it amazed us how much he changed in the last few weeks, driving home the importance of baby photography, providing a record of a very fleeting moment in time.
